The University of Illinois Urbana-Champaign announced on Jan. 17 that the Fall 2022 semester broke the university's previous record for highest international student enrollment.
According to the official numbers from International Student and Scholar Services, 11,548 students from 126 different countries were registered. The majority of these students — 10,040, hail from Asia. The statement also highlighted that 105 of these students come from Nigeria, making it "the first time an African country has had more than 100 students enrolled in a single semester."
These numbers come after a sharp decline in international registration during COVID-19. Though, faculty numbers have not had a chance to bounce back in response to the pandemic. According to director of ISSS Martin McFarlane, the Fall 2022 semester saw the lowest increase in employment of international staff and faculty since 2005.
