Last Tuesday night the Urbana School District 116 Board of education voted in favor of shutting down Wiley Elementary at the end of the school year. This decision comes just two weeks after the initial announcement.
The school board proposed the idea of shutting down Wiley elementary in order to perform needed renovations to remove abestos and fix the ventilation systems. Parents were invited to a closed meeting the week prior to get some of their questions answered but were not given a specific plan or date as to when the school would be opened again or how students and staff would be relocated. Two dozen members of the wiley community spoke against the sudden shut down Tuesday, stating that while they agree that renovations are needed, the district should develop a solid plan and allow the community time to process before proceeding with closing.
In a 4 to 3 vote the school board voted to proceed under health and safety concerns nearly five hours into the meeting.
